A Journey to Zambia that Changed Everything!

When Carol and Steve invited me to join the Africa Hope Fund trip to Zambia, I hesitated. Between work obligations, budget worries, and planning a trip in under two months, it felt impossible. But Africa had always been on my bucket list, and with a strong nudge from my husband, I said yes. Once I committed, the excitement kicked in. Safaris, new people, new purpose, I couldn’t wait!

Stepping into Mfuwe, I discovered a world so different from my own. Rural villages where education is a luxury, and where NGOs and locals work side by side to create real, lasting change. It was humbling and inspiring.

During our time there, we visited five literacy centers that help over two thousand children learn English each week, an essential skill for advancing in school and finding good jobs. Because most schools don’t teach English until fifth grade, these centers, which begin instruction in preschool, make an enormous difference. The children greeted us with songs, dances, poems, and speeches. My favorite moments were at the Uyoba literacy center, where I connected deeply with the students and teachers. Their joy, curiosity, and eagerness to learn were contagious. I left each day feeling valued, appreciated, and part of something meaningful.

Our group also worked with recent secondary school graduates as they learned leadership, life skills, and career basics, from writing a resume to building a personal website. Many graduates have already launched careers in medicine, hospitality, and wildlife conservation.

And yes, the safaris were unforgettable! We saw elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and impalas just feet away, all in their natural habitat! Even at Thornicroft Lodge, wildlife was part of daily life, hippos along the river, baboons everywhere, and elephants strolling by at sunset. One day, an entire elephant family wandered right past my room!

What struck me most was realizing how much impact ordinary people can make. Africa Hope Fund and other NGOs began with only a few dedicated volunteers. Today, they’ve expanded literacy, supported education, improved access to clean water, reduced poaching, and strengthened the local economy. Small, consistent efforts truly add up.

I left Zambia with a full heart, lifelong connections, and a determination to return. There is still so much to do, and I am inspired to be part of that change!
